A few years back people went crazy when I posted about the Amex Platinum 100K Bonus. And for good reason – at that time, those points were worth quite a bit more than they are today (devaluations have taken their toll). Last year I took advantage of a 150K bonus offer for a Business Amex Platinum card, which would still be considered a huge bonus today even given devaluations.Well, there’s a new offer that completely blows those out of the water and is the biggest credit card bonus I’ve ever seen. If you’re lucky enough to be targeted, you can get an absolutely massive 250K bonus American Express Membership Rewards points for meeting spend requirements on a Business Amex Platinum card. I first saw this on Twitter (which I highly recommend using for points/miles junkies):

Sounds like a no-brianer right? Well, let’s see his follow-up tweets when people asked about the spending requirements:

The breakdown of bonus points is this:
- Spend $5K in the first 6 months and get 50,000 bonus points.
- For every additional transaction of $5K+ in the first 6 months, get another 20,000 bonus points, up to 10 transactions.
That underlined part is important, because it’s very different from the normal “for every $X” – rather, with this offer you have to spend $5K in a single transaction to get the 20,000 bonus points. To max out this offer, which you should if you get it, you’d have to do that ten times in 6 months. If you’re doing the math in your head, that adds up to spending $55K to achieve all bonuses.
Even for someone like me that manufactures spend on a somewhat regular basis, that sounds like a bit much. It would be much easier if they just said spend $55K and get 250K bonus points, but I suppose you should have to go out of your way if you want to get an offer this big.
So let’s do some quick math here. Spending $55K would net 250K bonus points, plus the 55K points you get for spending money anyway. That amounts to 305K points total for completing the $55K spend as described. That calculates to a reward of ~5.55 points per dollar spent, which is a very strong return.
But again, the fact that it has to be in separate transactions makes this difficult for a vast majority of people. Still, keep a lookout for this in your mail, especially if you’ve received the 100K and 150K offers in the past. If you didn’t take advantage of those offers, you may very well be getting one of these next!
And by the way, this would go a long way in helping you plan an amazing honeymoon like I recently booked.
That is insane. Both the bonus and the spend structure.
Buy 20 iPads and resell. Rinse and repeat.
Right. And 5 returns. Now you’re stuck with 5 used iPads. Good luck.
